Allison, Barsky, Etc. Set for Toronto Premiere of Elegies

Monday, January 15, 2007

A cast has been assembled for Acting Up Stage Company Theatre's upcoming production of William Finn's song cycle Elegies, which will receive its Toronto premiere.

Running from February 15th through March 3rd at the Berkeley Street Upstairs Theatre, the production will star Thom Allison (Rent national tour), Dora Award-nominee Barbara Barsky (Anne of Green Gables), Steven Gallagher (Urinetown at Canstage), Eliza-Jane Scott (The Producers tour) and Michael Strathmore (Shaw Festival).

"How do we deal with loss in a post 9/11 world? Through the 18 stories told onstage, Tony Award winner William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) pays tribute to relatives and friends, long-lost pets, and the victims of 9/11, celebrating those who have passed on. Often hilarious, always touching, and very poignant, Elegies takes us on a musical journey that explores the modern world that we live in, and life’s infinite joys," state Acting Up notes on the show, which will be directed by Lezlie Wade.

With Mitchell Marcus as artistic producer, the show will include sets and costumes by Sarah Melamed, lighting by Paul Major and musical direction by Wayne Gwillim.

A cast recording of Elegies is available on the Fynsworth Alley label.  It features Michael Rupert, Betty Buckley, Carolee Carmello, Christian Borle and Keith Byron Kirk - all of whom starred in the song cycle's 2003 Lincoln Center Theater premiere.
