About the Take The Stage

A fun-filled afternoon for aspiring performers, families, and anyone looking to ‘take the stage’ for a day, all in support of Acting Up Stage Company.

The Spotlight Award!

  • Oct 6, 2013 @ 1pm-5pm
  • Winchester Street Theatre,
    80 Winchester St, Toronto

How does Take The Stage work?

Just like runners run marathons in groups, Take The Stage bands together musical theatre lovers to perform for a worthy cause. Groups register directly with Acting Up Stage, collect pledges, and then, on October 6, learn and perform a song with four-part harmony under the guidance of musical theatre’s biggest celebrities. After a marathon afternoon of high-octane skill development and fun-filled camaraderie, all teams will share their work in a blow-out performance competing for the coveted Spotlight Award!

This year’s teams and coaches are:

  • Scarborough Music Theatre coached by Louise Pitre. For over 50 years Scarborough Music Theatre has been performing for local audiences to bring musical theatre to our community. In addition to entertaining audiences, SMT provides the opportunity for local performers to express their creativity. Some of the people that you first had the chance to see on the SMT stage have gone on to perform at the Stratford Shakespeare Festive, the Shaw Festival, in productions for Mirvish and Dancap, and in Broadway touring productions. For more information about their shows - from buying tickets to auditioning to be part of one - please visit their web site at www.theatrescarborough.com. Among those people who have performed with us and then gone on to bigger professional productions, Jeff Madden played Lt. Cable in our 1997 production of South Pacific.
  • Etobicoke Musical Productions coached by Sharron Matthews. Etobicoke Musical Productions (EMP) is a not-for-profit theatre company formed in 1965. Since 1978, EMP has produced two shows each year; one in the spring and one in the fall, running for 8 performances each. For each production, they engage a director, musical director, and choreographer. Etobicoke Musical Productions evolved out of the enthusiasm and energy of a small group of people with a shared passion - musical theatre. EMP’s members, though amateur in status, have built up professional expertise in all things theatrical, both on stage and behind the scenes. It is this acknowledged dedication that has drawn many ‘out-of-towners’ to swell the local audience to approximately 3,500 per production. Etobicoke Musical Productions prides itself on achieving professional quality productions by true amateurs.
  • Bravo Academy coached by Jeff Madden. Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts is committed to providing high quality performing arts education to students of all ages and levels. Their aim is to assist students in building confidence through teaching skills in music, theatre and dance. All classes are taught by highly qualified instructors that are performers, educators and supporters of the arts. We offer group, private and semi-private classes in Music Theatre, Acting and Dance, as well as Voice, Piano, and more. Bravo Academy also offers advanced troupes for students wishing to perform music theatre in a professional setting. Visit us at www.bravoacademy.ca for more information.
  • MNJCC Singers coached by Lisa Horner. Team MNJCC Singers is assembled from members of the Miles Nadel Jewish Community Theatre who participate in the community centres music programs including choirs and ensembles. The members all come from a variety of occupations and backgrounds but are united by their love of music.
