How to be your own Dancing Queen

Last week, the Broadway Gods announced that Mamma Mia! will close on September 5 - after 14 years and 5,765 performances. While it’s always great to have some fresh blood on The Great White Way, we must pay tribute somehow to the musical giant - it’s a good thing we happen to have a musical theatre dance party planned for this weekend!

To prepare for the most anticipated Sunday night of the Toronto musical theatre calendar - you must become your own Dancing Queen! And with these (virtually) instructional dance videos according to genre, from a Twenties fad to the iconic “angry dance,” you’ll be well on your way.

“Dancing Queen” - Mamma Mia!

Step 1: Forget that movie ever happened.

“Footloose” - Footloose

Step 2: Get your friends together, and be each other’s dance doubles (a la Kevin Bacon’s famous angry dance movie scene).

“Won’t You Charleston With Me” - The Boyfriend

Step 3: Get those legs a-kickin’!

“Mambo!” - West Side Story

Step 4: Crash a local high school’s gym dance and start doing aerial acrobatics… with a Latin flair.

“Born to Hand Jive” - Grease

Step 5: Find the closest radio hot and demand a dance throwdown between everyone on the floor.

“Cell Block Tango” - Chicago

Step 6: Get arrested and practice your dips with your new cell mates.

“I Could Have Danced All Night” - My Fair Lady

Step 7: When it’s time to settle down on your cot to go to sleep, lie back and think about all the dancing you’ve yet to do. Now you’re a real Dancing Queen!
